Nepali on the steps
A very frequented place within our Nepali community here in Sydney is our popular steps in front of Energy Australia Building. Are you having a lazy day or just spending time during cl*** breaks or just looking around and wondering where to go next to drop in your job application? This is one place where all will stop for a at least a few minutes.
So talked about has this place become in Sydney that there is now a joke going around that “this spot is a place for people with no jobs to hang around”. However, one cannot deny that this spot does certainly remind us of Basantapur back home where you would see groups of people of different ages hanging around killing time.
One day I found myself sitting there waiting for my friends. It was quite a weird feeling. Sitting on the steps you see people flocking to God knows where. Everyone looks busy, looks like everyone has a purpose and a destination to get to. Then you also have the strollers who just walk at the slowest pace blocking the flow of traffic on the sidewalk.
I met a few Nepalese there and I asked them what they experienced while sitting there. They told me that they enjoyed the experience and usually hung around those step frequently.
After 15-20mins had passed, my friends finally arrived and I left my space on the steps for others to come and enjoy.
