Nepalese Man Gunned Down In Boston
39 year-old Surendra Dangol was fatally shot while he was working at a store (Tedeschi store) in Boston on Dec.26
(NECN: Ally Donnelly, Cambridge, mass.) - Today was an emotional day for relatives of the Boston convenience store clerk, who was murdered on the job, just one day after Christmas.
A Hindu funeral service took place today in Cambridge, massachusetts, for Surendra Dangol.
He had been working in the United States, trying to save money with the hopes of one day bringing his family overseas.
It is a gut-wrenching, heartbreaking sound -- the wailing of a wife, who has lost her husband. This is the first time Kalpana Dangol and her nine-year-old daughter have been to the U.S. They have come to a chapel not their own -- at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.
It was for a funeral mass for 39-year-old Surendra Dangol, the Nepal native who was shot and killed late last month during a robbery at the Tedeschi convenience store in Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood, where he was a clerk.
Dangol came to Somerville from Nepal four years ago. He was working, saving money, to bring his family to come live with him. Surveillance video shows a disguised man coming into the store, demanding money. Dangol handed it over, but the robber shot him anyway.
About 200 mourners came to the Hindu ceremony, many clutching flowers and rice to put in the casket.
Dangol's wife, who does not speak English, wrote a statement for the ceremony. In it, she thanked officials who helped secure visas for her family, so they could say goodbye to their husbanda and father with grace and dignity.
Boston Police say a number of tips have come in, but they are still working the leads. No arrests have been made. Police are asking the public for help.
The Tedeschi family has offered a reward of $25,000.
