An Introduction To Jindabaad
When you look at the band Jindabaad you are unsure of what to expect, are they rockers? Classical musicians? A group of friends out to have fun? What impression are you given? I personally put all my questions and judgments aside once the music began. Jindabaad is a Nepali rock band of 5 gifted young men, each extremely talented and dedicated to their music. They started off as a group of musically capable friends wanting to work together. All of them have a knowledgeable history in music and has also experimented and played in different kinds of bands. The music history of each band member varies from blues rock to jazz to progressive rock, but forming the band Jindabaad has allowed each of them to find a common ground where the experiment stops and the expression starts.
All of the band members, you could say, are self taught musicians. Though they may have learned from others in the beginning each individual has become the musician he is today because of hard work and practice. Rohit the bands’ vocalist and guitarist has been playing for 10 years, not only does he play for Jindabaad but he also produces and creates other artists including his own solo project. Rajan, the bassist, has been playing for 10-12 years; the comedian of the gang and a self taught visual artist is very well known in the Nepali underground music scene. Kiran is a very versatile and talented drummer and has been playing for 5 or more years. Abishek, the quiet one, is the keyboardist/ band electronic, he has been playing for the last 5 years and also plays in a jazz band. Sunny the lead guitarist is a well know and reputed guitarist in Nepal. He has been playing for 10 years also working from home building guitars and has been creating his own line.

In the studio, currently the band works on their upcoming new song, named In-motion (produced during the interview), and the release of their Extended play. They are producing this extended play (E.P) of 5/6 songs because they want to archive what they are doing and because they want to be heard all around the world. They all emphasized on the EP being a serious record but at the same time trying to include bits of humor. The band describes themselves as an art rock band which is basically an alternative form of music. The music they produce is in English and when I asked why the answer came as a fresh new view point towards the new generation of Nepali rock artists. Currently in the Nepali music scene there is a stereo typical mindset about singing in Nepali to have hits, looking at it from a different perspective they all want to aim for a new spectrum of music lovers who listen to not only Nepali lyrical music but also like their alternative rock genre in English.
They produce this kind of music because not only does it allow them to form a common ground but it also allows the musicians to meet in the same place and relate to one another. This production has taught them to become minimalistic in a way that wasn’t the same as what they all used to play, they have allowed themselves space to express their individuality. Passionate and serious about the music they produce, they work late into the mornings. Once the music stops the atmosphere is relaxed and pleasant, all the band members have a sense of humor yet are yet still settled enough to always pick up where they left off. The chemistry of the group is always admirable not only because they work together well but because the friendship they have is one you can see they all cherish
When you hear the name Jindabaad, most people would automatically think of a political, rebellious message of some sort. The word Jindabaad actually means “all hail” but the band chose this name because to them it represents strength. I feel this name represents the band, their strength in each other and their belief in music.
