Prabhat Manandhar
I love my job, yes I do!!! Well meeting new people, knowing more about them, and then writing down about them in words. Sometimes it’s difficult when you don’t get the right words to express their feelings, or whatever they try to tell you, so to take out the best in what you write, you should be able to play with words. The best part in the process is when your article is published and when you get the appreciation. Now who doesn’t like to read about themselves? And when it’s Cherry B…you should be really happy because I write good things about you!!!lol….I admit that I am a blabber mouth and that I love talking, so that’s what makes my job easy, I can talk and get the secrets out of them!!! I must be sounding scary, but believe me I just write what I feel like. So here’s what I have to say about an “extraordinary” man, Prabhat Manandhar.
I tell you, he’s got a lot of potential. When I met him, he’d just come back from his regular music classes, i.e. he teaches music to children in Triyog now isn’t that impressive? Yes indeed I’m talking about the guy who won hearts with his singles like Sunideu, Samjhana and Laijau. A very humorous person, he likes to be around friends and family and he loves kids. Most of the times, you can find him around Jhocche, but at other times he’s hopping around places, and well he calls himself an introvert. A music lover, he loves to compose his own songs. He’s performed mostly around Thamel circle in places like Electric pagoda, Shisha and Reggae. Talking about his future projects, he says he has a lot in store, as in he’s thinking of doing covers of old Nepali songs and also in the process of making his new album. The places he’s thought of performing are Attic, Electric Pagoda and Moods. Well we met up at his favorite spot Electric Pagoda itself, and u can imagine how I started asking him questions after questions. At one time he even got nervous, lol but later he opened up and this is what I got out of him. So if you’re interested in knowing more about him, do go through our lil chit chat. After you’re through it, you’ll find out why I call him an extraordinary musician. So here you go:

CB: First I must ask who your biggest musical influences were?
Prabhat Manandhar: Music has been carried on through generations in our family. When I was small my brothers used to play and adaptation was easy. When your whole family is dedicated to music, it comes naturally in a kid in the family and that’s how I learnt music, well, yes I was self taught when I was around 12-13 yrs old. Well talking about artists, I was inspired by Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Jamiroquai, Katie Melua, Nat King Cole. I was basically inspired by jazz music.
CB: Do you write your own music? Where do you draw the inspiration from when you write songs and what’s your favorite part in the process?
Prabhat Manandhar: I was in a band Elextrix where we used to improvise ourselves. We used to produce the tune first and then write the lyrics later. Well all my songs are common day to day types. Most of the songs are related with love and heartache, while in my songs I talk about usual stuff that teenagers face, as in day to day things. When this happens people can relate to them and this makes me happy. When I was in the band, we used to jam like 5 days a week. When I’m satisfied with the structure I feel like making songs.
CB: What genre of music do you consider your work to be?
Prabhat Manandhar: Well I’d say pop mixed with other genres, easy listening, funk, acoustic, not so heavy, generally what people can take in.
CB: What has been your biggest challenge as a musician?
Prabhat Manandhar: When I was in the band, we used to perform 5 days a week which was a bit hectic, had to suffer from throat problems, I had to sing even when I was not interested, and instead of a passion it became a job for me. Every singer has limitations, while people don’t understand this; they used to make me sings songs I didn’t know. Well music is not a job, you play music when your mind is relaxed.
CB: What are your current projects?
Prabhat Manandhar: My English album is in the making. It consists of light music, no drums, simply acoustic with vocals. I’ve focused more towards the feel of the song, words will be given priority. Well this will be a sad album and I shall name it “I’m gonna leave this world for a while.” The songs are almost over, I don’t want to go to the studio, I don’t understand mastering. I’ll be recording it all by myself through my cell phone or my web cam. Why I don’t like going to the studio? Well in the studio we use the metroneum, which spoils the feel of the music. I’ll leave my songs for free download, just make 4-5 CD’s only for a few interested people cuz that’s how I released my 1st album. I have 500 copies, I put them in my bag and distributed them to interested people, well it had always been my dream and I was very excited about it.
CB: Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
Prabhat Manandhar: err….10 years from now, I will have opened my own café, will have recorded a jazz funk album, I don’t exactly have a foresight (laughs). I will basically be living a simple and happy life.
CB: Among your songs, which are your favorites?
Prabhat Manandhar: hmm….it’s a difficult question, no one can judge their own songs, but as I have to take a name (smiles) I’d say Sampanna this is because every time I listen to it, I get positive messages, makes me happy. It tells you to get the most out of the things you have, what we usually ignore (smiles)
CB: Any advice to upcoming artists?
Prabhat Manandhar: Practice a lot, music is not just a dream. You should try to give Nepali music a variety; you should contribute to improve quality. Write songs that express inner feelings, focus on such songs that show expression properly. That’s what makes Nepali music strong. That’s about it (smiles)
CB: Where can people get your music?
Prabhat Manandhar: You can download my music from my website: www.reverbnation.com/suvaprabhat where you can find almost all of my 22-23 songs. They are available for free download. I don’t want to earn money by selling CD’s I just want people to recognize me. About my music videos, Sunideu is in the making and I’m looking for some models, so if anyone’s interested, you can contact me (laughs).
CB: People you’d like to thank for your success?
Prabhat Manandhar: Well I’d really like to thank Asish dai, Raymon (Asish Syangden and Raymon Shrestha from Kantipur Fm) and Garima dd for their immense support.
CB: What’s your motto in life that you abide by?
Prabhat Manandhar: “Don’t waste your days without doing something worthy or something that you can remember.”
